As the United States marks the first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has expanded its Renewing America initiative to focus on the domestic foundations of U.S. leadership—including mounting challenges to U.S. democracy and political institutions—and recommend needed policy fixes.

“Conventional thinking about U.S. national security policy has focused largely on threats from abroad,” said Christopher M. Tuttle, who serves as senior fellow and director of Renewing America. “Today, however, many of the most troubling dangers facing the United States are right here at home, and the internal strengths on which the United States has relied for the last eighty years are increasingly shaky. Renewing America recognizes this reality and is dedicated to finding routes to shore up the domestic assets that serve as the basis of American power.” From 2015 to 2019, Tuttle served as policy director of the majority staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations under Chairman Bob Corker (R-TN).

The Renewing America hub features a wide variety of original content from CFR’s scholars and editorial team, including books, reports, blogs, Backgrounders, In Briefs, and events.

“The United States is facing an array of domestic and international challenges. To succeed, it must strengthen its foundations—including its political foundations—at home,” said CFR Vice President and Deputy Director of Studies Shannon K. O’Neil. “We are pleased to relaunch Renewing America with new voices, fresh content, and innovative ideas in support of that goal.”
